Dartmoor's landscape is shaped by granite, and nowhere is this more distinctive than in its famous tors. There are more than 900 named tors, rocks and significant outcrops recorded across Dartmoor, ranging from dramatic hilltop formations to small and little-known rocky features. Our Dartmoor Tors Explorer focuses on the 163 significant named tors shown on current Ordnance Survey mapping. For Your Safety

If you're planning a walk on Dartmoor, it is important to choose a route appropriate to your own experience, fitness and ability, and to remember that conditions on the moor can change quickly. Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or boots and take several layers of warm and waterproof clothing, even if the weather looks settled when you set out. For longer or more remote walks, carry sufficient food and water, a charged mobile phone and suitable navigation equipment, and make sure someone knows where you are going. Check the weather forecast before setting out, allow plenty of daylight for your route, and be prepared to change your plans if conditions deteriorate.

Parts of northern Dartmoor are used by the Ministry of Defence for military training, with live firing taking place on the Okehampton, Merrivale and Willsworthy ranges. Public access is normally permitted when live firing is not taking place, but visitors should always check the latest firing programme before setting out, as times can change at short notice. A six-week programme of Dartmoor firing times is available online, and updates are also available by calling 0800 458 4868. Range boundaries are marked by red-and-white posts; red flags by day and red lights at night mean live firing is taking place and the range must not be entered.
