Castle Drogo - a Grand Day Out!
Just a scenic 30-minute drive from the Two Bridges Hotel, Castle Drogo offers visitors a captivating blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Standing proudly above the Teign Gorge, this striking granite fortress is the last castle ever built in England — and one of Dartmoor’s most fascinating attractions.
Castle Drogo was the ambitious vision of Julius Drewe, a successful businessman who dreamt of establishing a family legacy in stone. Designed by the celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, construction began in 1911 and took nearly two decades to complete, its progress halted by war, financial difficulties, and the challenges of the Dartmoor landscape. The result is a unique fusion of medieval grandeur and modern innovation — complete with electricity, central heating, and the unmistakable Lutyens touch.
Today, under the care of the National Trust, Castle Drogo invites visitors to step inside its storied walls. Wander through rooms filled with period furniture, personal family memorabilia, and engaging exhibitions that tell the story of the Drewe family and their bold vision. Discover the castle's hidden corners, admire the craftsmanship, and imagine life in a 20th-century castle built in the spirit of centuries past.
The surrounding grounds and gardens are just as impressive. Carefully restored and beautifully maintained, they offer a peaceful setting for a stroll, with far-reaching views over the Teign Valley and Dartmoor beyond. Stretch your legs on one of the many walking trails that begin at the castle, including routes down to the river or through the dramatic gorge — a haven for photographers and nature lovers alike.
If you're making a day of it, you might like to take along a delicious Two Bridges picnic lunch, which we can arrange for you (just let us know your requirements the night before).
Castle Drogo makes for a rewarding and memorable day out from the Two Bridges Hotel. After exploring its historic rooms and beautiful grounds, return to the warm welcome of our hotel — where log fires, cream teas, and fine dining await.
